Parents You Matter: Drugs/Alcohol, Your Teen and YOU
Did you know that kids who learn about the dangers of using drugs and alcohol from their parents are 50% less likely to use?
Given the number of drug/alcohol related tragedies involving area youth in recent years, the Kalamazoo County Substance Abuse Task Force announces the launch of this community outreach presentation designed to increase parents’ understanding and confidence in preventing and addressing drug and alcohol issues. This is an important effort in our community for the fight against drug use. It is a surprise to many parents that they are the most powerful influence in a child’s life — greater than peers, popular music, television, celebrities and the media! Our research shows that kids who consistently learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are 50% less likely to use drugs and alcohol than those who do not; yet, only 30% of teens report learning about the dangers associated with drug use from their parents.
This multi-media training program and Q & A session with local experts aims to educate parents of teens/tweens about why kids use drugs and alcohol and what parents can do to protect their children. The program, called Parents: You Matter, was created by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and outlines important prevention and intervention strategies for parents and care-givers.
